Carved Ancestry
Carved Ancestry is a series of works that combine Syriac letterforms and ancient Assyrian motifs. It is a merging of past and present, in the pursuit of connecting the Syriac language to its ancient roots. This work came to be because of a creative tick that Rabel couldn’t get rid of. Rabel is fascinated by the idea of re-envisioning existing forms: creating a better version, disassembling something old and rebuilding it into something new and vital, with cultural and artistic value of its own. Some ideas absolutely demand attention, and this one wouldn’t let go until Rabel had re-imagined and designed all 22 characters of the Syriac alphabet.
