ACOE SERIES
In the fourteenth century, the Assyrian Church of the East stripped the artwork from its walls. As a result, Assyrian society’s embrace of visual art has diminished over time. This series strives to revitalize it, restoring art to the Church by using familiar Church symbols as subject matter. Each symbol is cut as a stencil. The intricate horizontal and vertical line work drawn into the negative spaces leaves etched markings in the symbols, linking them to carvings in ancient Assyrian bas reliefs.
