Fatherhood Through the Eyes of an Artist

Turning Broken Pieces into Beautiful Bonds

The piece once sat proudly on a pedestal that I had built. Oneeta, my daughter, who often joins me in my studio, accidentally bumped into it one day. At just two years old, she quickly apologized, and I just as quickly forgave her. The experience was bittersweet. It was sad to see the piece break, yet it also mirrored my life as a new father. My world felt turned upside down—beautifully intact while simultaneously in fragments, each representing the emotions I’ve experienced as a father. This connection between the broken piece and fatherhood embodies the trials and tribulations I’ve faced, symbolizing the complex and evolving aspect of this journey.

Fatherhood, to me as an artist, is like the intricate process of mending broken pottery. Each shard, though broken, holds the potential to be pieced together in a way that creates a renewed masterpiece. This art of fatherhood involves picking up these pieces, fitting them together with love, patience, understanding, and faith, resulting in a beautiful reflection of the journey and effort it took to rebuild. It’s a transformative process that takes what was once fragmented and turns it into something that represents intellect, strength and beauty.

Listening to others and seeking advice often leaves one feeling a little dizzy, but it also invites the wisdom of the village into the journey of fatherhood. It’s about processing this collective knowledge, leaning on the community, and finding one’s unique path within it. The journey is about taking these pieces of advice and molding them, much like an artist molds clay, into something that fits your own family life and strengthens the bond between you and your children. It’s an evolving artwork, influenced by many, yet uniquely yours. In other words, lead by thoughtfully incorporating advice that is applicable to your unique circumstances.

To succeed in this art, it’s essential to be present and actively involved in your child’s life, setting a good example through your own behavior. Actions always speak louder than words. Open and honest communication fosters a deeper connection, while love and affection create a nurturing environment. Encouraging your child’s interests (even bugs), supporting their education, and fostering their independence builds a strong foundation for strong people. Teaching respect, speaking up, and admitting mistakes helps your child learn accountability and empathy. Practicing patience and seeing things from their perspective ensures their well-being and safety are always prioritized. Fatherhood, much like art, is a continuous process of learning, adapting, and creating something timeless and beautiful.

I know there is so much more to be said on this topic, and this is just the beginning. The journey of fatherhood, much like the art I create, is a complex and evolving work. Each day brings new lessons, challenges, and moments of profound joy that add layers to the story. As I continue to navigate this path, I look forward to sharing more insights and reflections, deepening the understanding of what it means to be a father and an artist.

The canvas of fatherhood is vast. My work as a father is to ensure that this canvas becomes a rich tapestry of knowledge, values, and memories, all contributing to their progress and well-being. It is an ongoing work, created with intention and care, reflecting the depth of my commitment to their journey.

Here’s to hoping they keep climbing on me for a flip, even when they’re adults!
